SEO for plumbers: how to get more customers from Google
Local search is where plumbing jobs are won. This guide walks through exactly what to do, in what order, to appear when someone in your area searches for a plumber — from your Google Business Profile to service pages, reviews, speed and content.

How local search actually works for plumbers
When someone searches plumber near me, Google shows two things: a map pack of three local businesses, then the usual list of links. They are ranked by different systems, and you need to work on both.
The map pack is driven mainly by your Google Business Profile — its categories, service area, review profile, photos, and how close you are to the searcher. The organic links below are driven by your website: its relevance to that exact search, its speed, its structure and its authority.
They reinforce each other. A profile linked to a fast, relevant website with matching services and locations outranks an identical profile linked to a slow generic one. That is why SEO and web design are the same job for a plumber, not two separate purchases.
- Relevance — does your business obviously do this job?
- Distance — how close are you to the person searching?
- Prominence — reviews, citations, links and website quality
Step one: master your Google Business Profile
This is the highest-return hour you will spend on marketing. It is free, it sits above the organic results, and most plumbers set it up once and never touch it again — which is exactly why the ones who maintain it win.
- Claim and verify the profile with your real business details
- Set the primary category to Plumber, and add secondary categories such as heating contractor, gas installation service or drainage service where accurate
- Define your service area by the towns and postcodes you genuinely cover, not a 100-mile radius
- List every service individually — boiler repair, boiler installation, bathroom fitting, leak detection, drain unblocking
- Upload real photos monthly: your van, your team, completed jobs, before and afters
- Fill in opening hours accurately, including whether you take out-of-hours calls
- Use the Products and Posts features to publish offers and recent jobs
- Answer the Questions section yourself before someone else does
Step two: build a review engine
Reviews are the strongest ranking factor you directly control, and the strongest conversion factor once someone lands on you. Most plumbers get reviews accidentally; the ones who dominate their area ask systematically.
The mechanics matter. Ask the same day the job finishes while goodwill is highest. Send a direct review link by text rather than asking them to search. Reply to every review — Google rewards engagement and future customers read the replies more carefully than the reviews.
Aim for a steady drip rather than a burst. Ten reviews a month for a year beats a hundred in one week, which looks manufactured.

Step three: build proper service pages
Google ranks pages, not businesses. A single services page mentioning eight jobs will not rank for any of them, because it is not the best answer to any specific search.
Give each main service its own page and write it for the person searching that exact term: what the symptoms are, what you do about it, how long it takes, what it typically costs, and what happens when they contact you.
- Boiler repair — target symptom searches such as boiler not firing or losing pressure
- Boiler installation — the highest-value page on most plumbing sites; include brands, warranties and finance if offered
- Bathroom installation — visual, with galleries and indicative pricing
- Emergency plumbing — availability, response times, call-out charges
- Central heating — radiators, power flushing, thermostats, controls
- Leak detection and repair — reassurance about damage and insurance
- Blocked drains — fast, urgent, price-sensitive; keep it blunt and practical
Step four: location pages that are not duplicates
Location pages work — but only when each one earns its place. Google is explicitly good at spotting pages where only the town name changes, and it filters them out of results.
Write pages only for towns you actively want work in. Include the specifics you would mention to a customer on the phone: the parts of town you cover, typical property and boiler types, jobs you have done there, response times from your base, and any local landmarks or districts.
Our own approach is the same one we recommend — see the areas we cover for an example of location pages written individually rather than generated.
Step five: speed and technical foundations
Technical SEO will not win rankings on its own, but its absence caps everything else. These are the items worth checking on any plumbing website.
- Loads in under three seconds on 4G — compress every image
- Mobile-first layout with tappable buttons and readable text
- HTTPS across the whole site
- Unique page title and meta description on every page
- One H1 per page, describing that page's topic
- LocalBusiness and Service schema markup, plus FAQ schema where relevant
- An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console
- Consistent business name, address and phone number everywhere online
Step six: content that catches customers early
Service pages catch people ready to book. Content catches them a week earlier, while they are still working out what is wrong and what it will cost — and it builds the topical authority that makes your service pages rank.
Write what customers ask you on the phone. How much does a new boiler cost. Why is my boiler losing pressure. How long does a bathroom take to fit. Should I repair or replace a 12-year-old boiler. Each is a real search with real volume and low competition.
Two or three genuinely useful articles a year, kept updated, outperform monthly filler nobody reads.
Step seven: local links and citations
You do not need an aggressive link building campaign. You need to exist consistently across the local web.
- Consistent listings on Google, Bing Places, Yell, Checkatrade and trade bodies
- Gas Safe and manufacturer accreditation directories
- Local chamber of commerce and business networks
- Sponsorships — a junior football kit often earns a genuine local link
- Suppliers and merchants who list approved installers
What to do first if you only have a weekend
Priority order, highest return first: optimise the Google Business Profile fully, set up a review request routine, make sure your website is fast and tappable on mobile with an obvious phone number, then build service pages, then location pages, then content.
If that list looks like more time than you have, this is exactly what we set up as part of a build. See our SEO services, our pricing, or read the full plumber website design guide.
