In short
Quotes for a plumbing website range from nothing to five figures, which is no help at all when you are trying to budget. This is an honest breakdown of what each option really costs in the UK, what you get for the money, and how to tell whether a price is fair.
The short answer
Most independent UK plumbers should budget £250 to £1,500 for a professional website, plus a small monthly amount for hosting, maintenance and support.
Below £250 you are usually buying a template with no strategy behind it. Above £1,500 you are paying for capability — bespoke design, booking systems, many location pages, ongoing marketing — that most single-van plumbers do not yet need.
For reference, our own website packages start at £250 and a typical plumbing build lands around £495.
Your four realistic options
DIY website builders
£0-£200 a year. Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy. Cheap and quick, but you supply the design judgement, the copywriting and the SEO. Often slow, and hard to structure properly for local search.
Cheap template websites
£150-£400 one-off. A freelancer applies a bought theme. Looks fine on the surface; commonly lacks service pages, schema, speed optimisation and any support afterwards.
Professional small-business build
£250-£1,500. Designed around your services and area, mobile-first, fast, with the page structure and conversion elements needed to actually produce enquiries. This is where most plumbers should be.
Agency build
£2,500-£10,000+. Bespoke design, custom functionality, ongoing campaigns. Right for multi-engineer companies with commercial contracts; overkill for a sole trader.
What actually affects the price
Number of pages
A five-page site costs far less than a twenty-page site with seven service pages and six location pages. Pages are where SEO lives, so this is the most legitimate reason for a higher quote.
Who writes the content
Supplying your own service descriptions and area lists reduces cost substantially. Having them written to match how customers search costs more and usually earns it back.
Design approach
A tailored design costs more than a customised template. For most plumbers a well-executed customised design is the sensible middle ground.
Photography
Real photos of your work outperform stock every time. Your phone is usually good enough; professional photography is a genuine but optional extra.
Functionality
Simple enquiry forms are standard. Online booking, engineer scheduling, payment handling or customer portals add real development time.
SEO and conversion work
Titles, schema, internal linking, speed optimisation, emergency messaging and call-to-action design. This is the difference between a website and a lead source.

Ongoing costs you should expect
We bundle hosting, updates, backups, security and small content changes into one predictable monthly plan — see website maintenance.
- Domain name — roughly £10-£15 a year
- Hosting and SSL — typically £5-£25 a month
- Updates, backups and security monitoring
- Content changes as your prices and services evolve
- Optional: SEO or Google Ads management
DIY versus professional: an honest comparison
DIY makes sense if you have genuinely spare evenings, enjoy the work, and mainly need a credible address to send referrals to. Many perfectly decent plumbing websites started that way.
It stops making sense when you count the hours. Building something that ranks and converts takes most people thirty to fifty hours of learning and fiddling. At any realistic hourly rate for a plumber, that is not a saving — and the result usually still lacks the service page structure and technical foundations that produce enquiries.
The practical test: if your website needs to generate work rather than merely exist, pay someone. If it only needs to exist, DIY is fine.
Judging value rather than price
The right question is not what does this cost, but what does one extra job earn me. If a boiler installation nets several hundred pounds, a £495 website that brings three extra installations a year has returned several times its cost — and it keeps working every year after that.
Conversely, a £99 website that produces nothing is infinitely expensive per lead. Cheap is only cheap if it works.
- Ask what the site will rank for and how — vague answers are a warning sign
- Confirm you own the site, the domain and the content
- Check whether service pages and location pages are included or extra
- Ask to see the mobile version of previous builds, not just desktop
- Confirm what happens after launch: support, updates, who fixes a broken form
