In short
Most plumbing websites do not fail dramatically. They lose enquiries quietly, one visitor at a time, because of a handful of fixable problems. Here are the fifteen we find most often, why each one costs you work, and exactly how to fix it.
Mistakes 1-5: the contact basics
1. The phone number is hard to find
A number in small grey footer text, or worse an image of a number that cannot be tapped, is the most expensive mistake in this list. Fix: put a tappable number in the header on every page, add a sticky call bar on mobile, and repeat it at the end of each page.
2. The enquiry form asks for too much
Twelve fields including full address and preferred contact method will halve your submissions. Fix: name, phone, postcode, job type, optional photo. Anything else you can ask when you call back.
3. The form does not actually work
Silent failures are commoner than plumbers realise — a changed email address, a spam filter, an expired plugin. Fix: test it monthly from your own phone, and make sure submissions are logged somewhere as well as emailed.
4. No WhatsApp or messaging option
Plenty of customers will send a photo of a leaking valve but will not phone a stranger. Fix: add a WhatsApp button; it captures enquiries that would otherwise never exist.
5. No clear next step at the end of a page
Visitors reach the bottom of a page and simply stop. Fix: end every page with one specific action — get a free boiler quote, book an emergency call-out, send a photo for a price.
Mistakes 6-10: trust and credibility
6. No reviews anywhere on the site
Visitors have to leave and search for you elsewhere, and many do not come back. Fix: pull three to five recent Google reviews onto the homepage and place two beside every enquiry form.
7. Qualifications not displayed
Gas Safe registration, WaterSafe, CIPHE membership and public liability insurance are actively looked for. Fix: show your Gas Safe number in the header or footer and explain your accreditations on the about page.
8. Stock photos instead of your own work
A smiling model with a spotless wrench convinces nobody. Fix: ten to twenty phone photos of your own installations, ideally before-and-after pairs, captioned with the job and the town.
9. No sense of a real person
Faceless copy about excellence and integrity reads like a lead-selling middleman. Fix: a photo of you and the van, your first name, how long you have traded, and why you started.
10. No pricing information at all
Total silence makes visitors assume expensive and keep shopping. Fix: publish a call-out charge, an hourly rate, or starting-from figures for common jobs, with a free-quote offer for anything complex.
Mistakes 11-15: findability and performance
11. All services crammed onto one page
Boilers, bathrooms, heating and drains in one paragraph cannot rank for any of them. Fix: a page per service, each written for the customer searching that specific job.
12. No towns named anywhere
If your page titles and headings never mention where you work, you will not appear in local searches. Fix: include your main town in your homepage title and H1, and create an areas covered page plus pages for your key towns.
13. Slow loading on mobile
Multi-megabyte photos and bloated page-builder code push sites past five seconds on 4G, and visitors leave before it renders. Fix: compress and resize every image, serve modern formats, and strip unused plugins.
14. Poor mobile layout
Text that needs pinching, buttons too small to tap, menus that will not open. Fix: design mobile-first and test on a real phone, not a shrunk browser window.
15. No emergency information
Emergency searches are the highest-value traffic a plumber gets, and they go to whoever states availability clearly. Fix: a dedicated emergency section stating hours, realistic response time, covered postcodes and call-out charge — and be honest about it.

Five more worth checking
- No HTTPS padlock, so browsers warn visitors the site is not secure
- Business name, address and phone inconsistent with your Google Business Profile
- Duplicate or missing page titles and meta descriptions
- The site has not been updated in years — old prices, dead links, outdated services
- No tracking, so you cannot tell which marketing produced which job
