Google Ads for plumbers: how to generate more enquiries

In short
SEO takes months. Google Ads takes hours. For emergency call-outs and high-value boiler work, paid search can fill the diary while your organic rankings build — but only if the campaign is set up for how plumbing customers actually search. Here is how to do it without wasting budget.
Why paid search suits plumbing
Advertising works best when demand already exists and the buyer is in a hurry. Plumbing is close to a perfect match: nobody searches emergency plumber near me out of curiosity, and the decision is usually made within minutes.
The other advantage is control. You choose the exact searches, the exact postcodes and the exact hours. You can run ads only during your working hours, only in the towns you cover, and only for the jobs you actually want.
The trade-off is cost. Plumbing clicks are expensive because every competitor wants the same urgent searcher. That makes the difference between a well-built campaign and a default one enormous.
Which campaign types to use
Search campaigns
The core of any plumbing account. Text ads against specific searches. Start here and stay here until it is profitable.
Local Services Ads
Pay-per-lead placements above the normal ads with a Google Guaranteed badge, subject to checks. Often the cheapest source of qualified calls where available.
Call-only ads
Mobile ads where the only action is a phone call. Excellent for emergency campaigns during hours you can answer.
Performance Max
Automated and broad. Useful once you have conversion data, risky as a starting point because it spends widely with little visibility.
Keywords: what to bid on and what to block
High-intent keywords worth paying for
- emergency plumber plus your town
- boiler repair plus your town
- new boiler installation plus your town
- blocked drain plus your town
- leak repair plus your town
- 24 hour plumber near me
- bathroom fitters plus your town
Match types
Use phrase and exact match. Broad match hands Google permission to spend your budget on loosely related searches, which is how plumbers end up paying for plumbing courses and plumber jobs.
Negative keywords to add on day one
- jobs, vacancies, salary, apprenticeship
- course, training, qualification, NVQ
- DIY, how to, yourself, YouTube
- free, cheapest, wholesale, parts
- supplier, merchant, screwfix
- any towns outside your service area

Landing pages: where the money is won or lost
The most common reason plumbing ad campaigns fail is not the ads. It is that every click lands on a general homepage, where the visitor has to work out whether you do their job in their area.
Match the page to the search. An emergency ad should land on an emergency page that states availability, response time and covered postcodes, with the phone number at the top. A boiler installation ad should land on a boiler page with brands, warranties, indicative pricing and a quote form.
Google also rewards this with a better quality score, which lowers your cost per click — so relevance saves money as well as converting better.
- One message and one action per page
- Phone number visible without scrolling on mobile
- Reviews and Gas Safe number near the button
- Loads in under three seconds on 4G
- Short form with an optional photo upload
Call tracking and measuring what works
Most plumbing conversions are calls, so a campaign measured only on form fills is measuring the minority. Enable call reporting and call extensions so Google attributes calls to campaigns and keywords.
Then track the thing that matters: cost per job, not cost per click. If emergency call-outs cost £40 in ads and net £150, keep going. If bathroom enquiries cost £120 in ads and convert one in ten, that campaign needs rethinking.
- Turn on conversion tracking for calls and form submissions
- Ask every caller how they found you and log it
- Review the search terms report weekly for the first month, then monthly
- Pause keywords with spend and no conversions after enough clicks to judge
Realistic budgets
Start at £10-£20 a day, concentrated on your highest-value services and tightest geography. That produces enough data within two to three weeks to see which keywords convert.
Once you know your cost per job, scale the campaigns that are profitable and cut the rest. Increasing budget on a campaign that is not yet profitable simply loses money faster.
Seasonality matters: boiler and emergency demand spikes from October to February. Many plumbers weight spend heavily to winter and reduce it in summer.
Ads or SEO? Use both, in this order
Ads buy you visibility today at a fixed price per click. SEO earns visibility over months but costs nothing per click once established. The sensible pattern for most plumbers is to run modest Ads for emergency and high-value terms while the SEO work matures, then reduce paid spend as organic rankings take over.
Both need the same foundation: a fast, credible website with proper service pages. If yours is not there yet, start with the plumbing website design guide for UK plumbers or look at our packages.
