How Many Plumbing Domains Contain a Service Keyword?

428 of the 500 UK plumbing and heating website domains analysed by Gee Web Design (85.6%) contained a plumbing/heating-related service term. 312 of the 500 domains analysed (62.4%) contained “plumb” or “plumbing”, and 165 of the 500 domains analysed (33.0%) contained “heat” or “heating”.

428 / 500

85.6%

of websites contained a plumbing, heating, gas, boiler, drainage or bathroom-related service term in their domain.

  • Plumb / Plumbing62.4%
  • Heat / Heating33.0%
  • Gas8.8%
  • Boiler4.2%
  • Emergency4.8%
  • 24/7 signal2.2%

One of the clearest findings from our research was just how common descriptive domains remain in the UK plumbing industry.

Many businesses still use variations of:

  • [Location] + Plumbing
  • [Location] + Heating
  • Plumbing + [Location]
  • Emergency + Plumber + [Location]

This can immediately communicate what the business does, but it also creates a market where many competitors look and sound remarkably similar.

The opportunity

A memorable plumbing brand combined with strong website SEO can potentially create greater differentiation than relying on keywords in the domain alone.

How Common Are Location Keywords in Plumbing Domains?

160 of the 500 UK plumbing and heating website domains analysed (32.0%) contained a location signal corresponding with the city/location group assigned to that website, and 151 of the 500 domains analysed (30.2%) combined a service term with a location signal.

160 / 500

32.0%

contained a recognisable location signal matching the city group used in our research.

151 / 500

30.2%

combined both a service term and location signal.

Local search is hugely important to plumbing businesses, but an exact-match local domain isn't the only way to establish geographic relevance.

Strong plumbing websites can build local visibility through:

  • Genuine service-area pages
  • Location-specific content
  • Google Business Profile optimisation
  • Local customer reviews
  • Completed projects
  • Internal linking
  • LocalBusiness structured data
  • Strong titles and headings

We cover the practical side of this in our guides on SEO for plumbers and local SEO services.

Your domain doesn't need to contain every location you serve. Your website architecture and content can do the local SEO work.

How Many UK Plumbing Domains Are Brand-Led?

63 of the 500 UK plumbing and heating website domains analysed (12.6%) met our definition of a brand-led domain.

63 / 500

12.6%

were classified as strongly brand-led under our domain-name test.

For this research, “brand-led” means the domain contained neither one of our detected core plumbing/heating service terms nor the city signal associated with that website in the dataset.

This does NOT mean the remaining businesses do not have brands.

It shows that the UK plumbing domain landscape is overwhelmingly descriptive.

“In a market full of similar plumbing domain names, a memorable brand can become a competitive advantage.”

How Many Plumbing Websites Use .co.uk?

423 of the 500 UK plumbing and heating websites analysed (84.6%) used a .co.uk domain. The remaining 77 websites (15.4%) used another domain extension.

423 / 500

84.6%

used a .co.uk domain.

  • .co.uk84.6% (423)
  • All other extensions15.4% (77)

For UK-focused plumbing businesses, .co.uk remains by far the most common domain extension in our dataset.

But the extension itself isn't what makes a plumbing website successful.

Content quality, local relevance, trust, authority, usability and conversion design matter considerably more.

How Common Is HTTPS Across UK Plumbing Websites?

488 of the 500 UK plumbing and heating website URLs analysed by Gee Web Design (97.6%) used HTTPS.

488 / 500

97.6%

used HTTPS.

HTTPS is now effectively a baseline requirement rather than a competitive advantage.

Customers submitting information through quote and contact forms should expect their connection to be encrypted.

SSL isn't a differentiator anymore. It's the minimum.

How Long Is the Average Plumbing Website Domain?

The median core domain-name length across the 500-site dataset was 17 characters, and the average core domain-name length was approximately 17.3 characters. 55 of the 500 domains analysed (11.0%) were hyphenated.

Don't sacrifice memorability simply to squeeze another keyword into your domain. Your customers need to remember it too.

What Happened When We Crawled All 500 Websites?

398 of the 500 websites tested (79.6%) returned a clean readable response to our audit crawler on 11 August 2026. 102 of the 500 websites tested (20.4%) did not return a clean readable response in the crawler environment.

398 / 500

79.6%

returned a normal page response our crawler could successfully read.

102 / 500

20.4%

did not return a clean crawlable response in our audit environment.

This does NOT mean 20.4% of plumbing websites were offline.

Responses included:

  • Server errors
  • Access restrictions
  • Verification screens
  • Anti-bot protection
  • Other responses preventing automated access

Security technology can intentionally block automated crawlers while allowing human visitors to access the website normally.

Therefore this metric must always be described as “crawler fetchability” — not “website uptime” or “broken websites”.

How Many Plumbing Websites Mention Emergency Services in Their Domain?

24 of the 500 domains analysed (4.8%) contained the word “emergency”, and 11 of the 500 domains analysed (2.2%) contained an obvious 24/7-style signal.

24 / 500

4.8%

contained “emergency”

11 / 500

2.2%

contained an obvious 24/7-style signal.

This does not mean these are the only businesses offering emergency services.

Businesses genuinely providing emergency plumbing should make their availability extremely prominent through page content and CTAs such as:

  • 24/7 Emergency Plumber
  • Call Now
  • Same-Day Call-Outs
  • Emergency Plumbing in [Location]

What Makes a Good Plumbing Website in 2026?

A strong plumbing website should clearly communicate the services offered, areas covered, trust signals and the next action a potential customer should take, while providing a technically sound, mobile-friendly and search-friendly experience.

Our research highlights an important point:

Having “plumber” in your domain isn't enough.

A plumbing website should quickly answer four customer questions.

01

DO YOU PROVIDE THE SERVICE I NEED?

Make boiler repair, leaks, bathrooms, heating, servicing and emergency plumbing easy to find.

02

DO YOU COVER MY AREA?

Clearly communicate genuine service locations.

03

CAN I TRUST YOU?

Show relevant:

  • Reviews
  • Gas Safe credentials
  • Insurance
  • Guarantees
  • Accreditations
  • Completed projects
  • Real photographs

04

HOW DO I CONTACT YOU?

Use highly visible:

  • Call Now
  • Request a Quote
  • Book a Plumber
  • Get a Free Quote

Improve My Plumbing Website

What We Learned From Analysing 500 Plumbing Websites

The biggest opportunity isn't more keywords.

The plumbing industry already uses keyword-heavy domains extensively.

The bigger opportunity is combining:

  • Memorable brand
  • Strong local SEO
  • Clear services
  • Trust
  • Easy enquiries

A plumbing website shouldn't simply exist.

It should help turn people searching for a plumber into actual enquiries.

Is Your Plumbing Website Keeping Up?

If your plumbing website looks dated, struggles to generate enquiries or doesn't properly communicate why customers should choose you, it may be time for an upgrade.

Gee Web Design creates modern websites for UK plumbing and trade businesses with a focus on local visibility, trust and turning visitors into enquiries.

How We Defined the Data

Service keyword
For this study, a service keyword means a plumbing/heating-related term detected in the website’s root domain, including terms such as plumbing, heating, gas, boiler, drainage or bathroom.
Location signal
For this study, a location signal means a recognisable geographic term in the domain corresponding with the city/location group assigned to that website in the dataset.
Brand-led domain
For this study, a brand-led domain means a domain containing neither one of our detected core service terms nor the city/location signal associated with that website.
Crawler fetchability
Crawler fetchability describes whether our audit crawler received a normal readable page response during the research. Crawler fetchability is not the same thing as website uptime: a failed crawler response can be caused by anti-bot technology, access restrictions, server responses or verification systems even when a website works for normal visitors.

Gee Web Design analysed 500 unique UK plumbing and heating website domains for this study, covering 74 UK city/location groups.

What percentage of UK plumber websites used HTTPS?

488 of the 500 websites analysed used HTTPS, equivalent to 97.6% of the dataset.

How common are .co.uk domains among UK plumbing businesses?

423 of the 500 websites analysed used a .co.uk domain, representing 84.6% of the dataset.

How many plumbing websites had “plumb” or “plumbing” in their domain?

312 of the 500 domains analysed contained “plumb” or “plumbing”, equivalent to 62.4%.

160 of the 500 domains analysed, or 32.0%, contained a location signal corresponding with their assigned city/location group.

Does having a location keyword in a domain guarantee better Google rankings?

No. This research measures how domains are named; it does not establish that location keywords cause higher Google rankings. Local visibility can also be influenced by website content, relevance, authority, Google Business Profile signals, reviews, internal linking and technical SEO.

Were 20.4% of the plumbing websites offline?

No. 102 of the 500 websites did not return a clean readable response to our audit crawler, but this can occur because of server responses, access restrictions, verification screens or anti-bot systems. We therefore describe this measurement as crawler fetchability rather than website uptime.

What makes a good plumbing website?

A strong plumbing website should clearly communicate the services offered, areas covered, trust signals and the next action a potential customer should take while providing a technically sound, mobile-friendly and search-friendly experience.

About This Research

This study was conducted by Gee Web Design in August 2026.

The dataset consisted of 500 unique UK plumbing and heating website root domains covering businesses across 74 UK city/location groups.

Duplicate root domains were removed before analysis.

Domain-level measurements were calculated across the complete dataset.

Each supplied URL was also tested through a web crawler on 11 August 2026 to determine whether a clean page response could be retrieved.

Crawler failures should not be interpreted as proof that a website was unavailable to human visitors because security and anti-bot technology can intentionally restrict automated access.

We deliberately do not publish statistics for PageSpeed, Core Web Vitals, structured data, mobile usability, conversion rates or Google rankings where those measurements were not independently performed across all 500 websites.

Limitations

  • Crawler fetchability is not a measure of website uptime.
  • Ranking causation was not tested; this study measures how domains are named, not how they perform.
  • Core Web Vitals were not measured across all 500 websites.
  • PageSpeed was not measured across all 500 websites.
  • Conversion rates were not measured.
  • Findings describe the 500 websites analysed and should not be read as figures for the entire UK plumbing industry.
